Choosing a Career
Have you ever heard anybody tell you “kid, you can be whatever you want to be”. That statement is really true. As long as you decide to, you can be ANYTHING you WANT to be (please take note of the word WANT), but you must be sure that is what you WANT. I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m stressing on the whole “WANT” thing. Well, that reason is simple. There are so many grownups today that are stuck in jobs they don’t enjoy (I even dare to say that more than 50% of Nigerians today hate their jobs). Trust me you don’t want to end up like that. You don’t want to spend money and time in the University preparing yourself for a job that will not make you happy.
One of the major reasons people end up in jobs they don’t like is that they allowed other people to pick their career for them. Mummy says “you must become a doctor”. Daddy says “my child must become an engineer”. Aunty says “you must become ” it seems like has reached a decision about what you must become. That can be a bit frustrating (I see you nodding your head now like “that’s exactly how I feel”).
In a situation like this, you will need to be on your own, take out time and think about what you WANT to do with your life, what you would like to be. Your final decision should be based on your interests and abilities. Your choice will then lead you to determine what course you will study in the University. There are ways too many graduates who only realize that they spend the last four, five or six years in the University reading the wrong course when they’ve graduated (I don’t think you want to end up like that).
So there it is …. Now you know that it is YOUR duty to determine what you want to become.
